Participants of Zen Columbus Sangha meditating in Beach Fellowship Hall at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, Columbus, Ohio

We welcome newcomers, beginners, and those more experienced. When you come join us during a meditation session, this is what to expect:

  • Please try to arrive 5-10 minutes prior to the beginning of the session to settle without hurry. Volunteers arrive early to set up the room.
  • Cushions (Zafu), mats (Zabuton) and chairs are available for use.
  • Our meditation sessions consist of two 25 minute periods of sitting meditation (Zazen) with 10 minutes of walking meditation (Kinhin) in between. A bell rings to signify the beginning and end of each period.
  • Following the meditation, we hold a short Zen service, with chants or readings. The chant leader will explain which readings we are reading so that you can read along.
  • If you are new to meditation, you are welcome to attend the Introduction to Zazen orientation (see schedule and handout), or watch this video.
  • If you are new to the Sangha, please feel free to let the timekeeper or chant leader know if you have questions. The chant leader sits near the altar and the timekeeper sits at the back farthest from the altar.
  • If you arrive after meditation has begun, you may enter quietly during the sit or during walking meditation.
  • If you need to leave after meditation has begun, you may leave quietly during the sit or during walking meditation.
  • After the sit is completed, all participants help put their mats and cushions away.
  • There is usually time after the sit to meet and ask questions. The after-sit time is generally more relaxed on the weekend. On Saturdays, many participants go for coffee and conversation.
  • All are welcome – especially you!
